Castello di Meleto: The History of Wine in Gaiole in Chianti since 1256
Rosato Virginia, produced purely from Canaiolo grapes. This variety has ancient origins, presumably cultivated by the Romans but only recently rediscovered. Virginia 2017 is produced from grapes grown between 450-500 meters above sea level on a plot within the San Piero Vineyard. The Canaiolo is harvested completely by hand and aged in both steel and cement tanks for six months. With a lovely pale rose color, this wine is characterized by notes of strawberry and sour cherry and the finish leaves a pleasant freshness on the palate.
2017 was a complicated year, marked by extremely cold temperatures in the winter and spring but with a particularly hot summer. The scarcity of rain also contributed to this unusual vintage. All these conditions led to a reduction in terms of yield, but excellent quality. This was made possible thanks to meticulous vineyard management consisting of continuous monitoring and constant working of the land. The 2017 wines, coming from all five macro zones, therefore have excellent aromas and a distinct elegance.
