Clay

Clay soil can be of varied composition and with differing elements. It is often light in color and with little adhesiveness, but in other areas it can be red and quite adherent. It can be difficult to work with and extremely tough. It has a strong ability to retain rainwater and consequently offers little drainage. In contrast to sandy soils, mechanical operations become impossible to carry out unless the soil is perfectly dry and even walking on foot becomes challenging. It performs best during dry vintages while in those characterized by abundant rainfall, the cultivation of the vine must be constantly monitored.
